I had been blogging for about 10 months and was totally consumed with it.  I had seen considerable value out of my blog, and was actively encouraging others to blog. The crazy lengths companies will go to hire and retain high-level women Companies that have both men and women in high-level positions see improvements in productivity, innovation, safety, and profitability. Yet the number of women with jobs at the top is still decreasing. You know why you would not want one of those jobs: 80-hour weeks, monthly travel, other people raising your children. But I wonder if you know the incredible lengths a company will go to attract and keep a woman who has reached a top position. These are stories I hear from women I coach and companies who hire me to recruit the type of women I coach. Coaching client: Managing director in investment banking in NYC. Three weeks after the third baby, the nanny quit. The nanny was supposed to raise the kids til they went to college. But instead, in an unprompted exit interview from hell, the nanny said the house is chaos, the parents dont get home on time and the family needs two full-time nannies and a chef if they want someone to stay in the job long-term. Her husband was a deer in headlights. He hated managing one nanny so much as a stay-at-home dad that he went back to work. The idea of coordinating two nannies was too much. Managing two nannies, a housekeeper and now a chefâ€"its a part-time job in itself. She told her boss she was thinking of leaving.  Word got out and three other banks offered her a job. Her boss told her if she would stay she could have any job she wanted. The firm would give her whatever accommodations she needs. They really need her to stay. She quit so she could be home with kids. Coaching client: Woman on track to be a partner at top NYC law firm. When she had her first baby she got really efficient, but it didnt matter because her firm runs on billable hours. The more efficient she got the better a deal her clients got. Her family never benefitted from her efficiency. By the second child, even with a stay-at-home husband, she had had enough. She never saw her first baby and she didnt want that to happen with the second one. She moved her family out of NYC and became an in-house lawyer at a company in Georgia. But she found that she was getting paid half as much money to do more than 3/4 of the workload she had before. When she told her old boss the situation, he asked her to come back. She said she had to work remotely and she couldnt go to the office every day. She wanted to be with her kids. He said fine. Her husband is a stay-at-home dad, but shes at home all the time, with very flexible hours. The firm makes sure clients assume she is in NYC. She goes to meetings in NYC once a month if theres no way around it. At a recent performance review, her boss asked what shed like to work toward next. Her thought was: Nowhere. I just want to keep making this much money and being with my family. But she said, Id like to be work toward being made Counsel. The partner said, Okay. Youre counsel. Certainly everyone in the law firm knows shes can work remotely because shes a woman. And now everyone knows she was made Counsel because shes a woman. She doesnt care. She says they would do it in a heartbeat for another woman at her level, but there arent any. Recruiting client: Company looking for someone to lead a department of 75 engineers. I dont do a lot of recruiting, but often I get hired when the candidate is a very high-level woman. Its a specialized talent to be able to talk her into taking the job, and I can help a company do that. Mostly because I know all the reasons why women dont want high-level jobs. The board is getting called out for having no senior women so this position has to go to a woman. When the search went nowhere the company announced there is basically no salary cap. Still, no takers. Recruiting client: Company drowning under a pile of resumes for marketing VP. The company wants a woman in this role. (Probably so the company doesnt have to find a woman for the role of engineering   VP.) I look through the stack and Im surprised to see almost every woman has listed at some point on her resume Time off for children. Apparently, HR sees this all the time. No one cares. As long as the woman wants to reenter the workforce, HR wants them. I chose two women to interview. Both are super qualified, and both were absolute masters of the interview process. But it turned out that each will continue staying home with their kids. I can understand that. I used to apply for jobs just to make sure I could still get one. Maybe one of them will start an interview coaching business. Me: Why am I writing this anyway? I spend a lot of time asking myself why I stopped giving speeches for $15,000 a pop. I told myself it doesnt make sense to say no: even if I hate getting dressed up and getting on a plane, I can do one speech a month and it would be a good way to make money. I called someone who used to book me a lot. He booked me in three hours. The world of top speakers is mostly men, and people are always looking for high-level female speakers. The date was five months away. I told myself that by then Id be used to the idea of travel for work. I didnt get used to the idea. Because I dont want to disrupt my kids days so that I can make a lot of money. But I did worry a lot that my decision was intellectually lame or spoiled of me or indulgent toward my kids or something else bad. Hearing that other women gave up great opportunities makes me relieved. This is something that makes sense, on many levels, and thats why the offers people make to women are so off-the-charts in generosity and flexibility. I wish I understood my situation better, though. I wonder: am I like the woman who keeps working because the job is relatively cushy or am I the woman who interviews with little intention of actually taking a job.

Are You Afraid to Start Networking Conversations - Hire Imaging Most, job seekers know intuitively that talking to people is a powerful means of landing their right-fit job. Statistics strongly back up getting a job through talking to someone  you know or should get to know. There’s where the fear creeps in. Fear of being that pest asking for something; fear of mingling at an event or worse, delivering an elevator speech or pitch. Working the room; picking up the phone to call someone you don’t know or haven’t seen in a long time. It’s scary. It’s also one of the most important things you need to do in your job search, unless you’re seeking a job as a recluse. Reframe your perspective. A misconception that can make your search more difficult is to believe that these conversations are about you. They’re not. And they’re not about you asking for a job. You want to ask questions to collect information, perspectives, recommendations, suggestions, referrals, etc. Focus on the person you’re talking to. Questions like, “How did you get started in this work?” or “What do you wish you knew then about your work that you know now?” can arm you with valuable information for other networking and interviewing. You are aiming for targeted research  rather than self-promotion. In first-level conversations, the talk will inevitably shift back to you. When it does, talk very briefly about your background, what you do well, and what you want. Keep it as short as possibleâ€"just a few carefully thought-out sentences. Then turn attention back to the other person. If the word networking is scary, reframe it. Whether you’re talking to someone at a networking event, having coffee, or talking on the phone, you’re having a mutually beneficial conversation. Where do I start? If talking to people you should get to know is scary, think “reconnecting with friends and people you know” as a good place to start. Whether you’re extroverted or introverted, this should work. You just engage in meaningful, casual and somewhat-structured conversations to build long-term connections. These are usually mellow conversations with people you know and trust; its just a twist in the direction of the conversation. This approach allows you to practice comfortably, without the thought of a looming mistake to be a major uh-oh. You’re not starting that phone call with, “You don’t know me.” You’re not jumping the gun by approaching high-level contacts too early in the process (you’re still nervous about direction and strategy). Why dive in with these potentially important decision-makers before you’re ready? Who are these reconnection people? These are the folks with whom you are confident and comfortable. They’re easy for you to approach and talk to. They are often what coaching guru, Susan Whitcomb calls the “bone marrow people.” They support you. They often have suggestions or ideas for you. Most will want to help you and if they understand the nature of the conversation. They will often remind you of your strengths. Some of them will have valuable contacts for you; some won’t. But never rule anyone out. These people are reachable. They are folks who will usually ask how you are, and how your family is doing. Why approach these people? Why should you have conversations with these people? They are support people, information people, and people who will keep you afloat when the inevitable dead ends, no’s or other roadblocks surface. Don’t feel you know them inside and out. Given a certain scenario presented by you, they may well surprise you with new dimensions you hadn’t seen before. And because they are your bone-marrow people, they are inclined to let you know when they hear of an opportunity. So, pick up the phone and start a conversation. If these are your first-level contacts, it won’t matter if your introduction is a bit stilted: “This may sound strange, John,” or “Bear with me, Marge.” It will be okay. Start with baby steps, allowing at least a month to talk to these first-level bone-marrow people. Ask them about people they know. You’ve probably never had this kind of conservation with them before. That’s okay. There is a method to the madness. And most importantly, don’t hang up or if meeting personally go home, without asking the all-important question: “Who else do you know that I should talk to?” In my next post, I’ll share more about the whys and hows of having these structured first-level conversations to catapult your flourishing network! It’s a day for all of us hardworking adults to leave a bit early and enjoy the rest of the day relaxing or doing something fun. And even if you can’t get out of work early, you can â€" and should â€" still make some time to enjoy yourself! Make Thursday night a time for you to celebrate and have fun instead of stressing or doing the household chores you normally do. You deserve something special! If you’re looking for a fun night, here are some ideas to try: Treat Yourself to a Mini Shopping Spree When was the last time you really bought yourself something nice? Head over to the mall and buy something fancy. Or, if online shopping is your game, surf the Internet until you find something perfect. Or Treat Yourself Another Way â€" at the Spa This is the perfect opportunity to let yourself relax and ignore the stress that the workday usually brings. Invite a couple of your best friends if you’re feeling a girls’ day, or maybe just give yourself some alone time â€" especially if that’s something you don’t get too often. Cuddle up at Home With a Good Movie or a Book With things being so hectic in our professional lives, sometimes there’s nothing better than just having a nice day at home. Pop some popcorn and put on that movie you’ve wanted to see forever but didn’t have time for, or open up that old favorite book you haven’t read in years. It could be just what you need. Visit the Local SPCA and Play With the Puppies The animals in the shelter want nothing more than some love and attention from people. And what could be better for you than some puppy therapy? Go and give them some time to run around and enjoy being surrounded by adorable animals. Even better: If one really catches your eye, consider giving it a forever home! Take a Class If you have some sort of community center around, it’s bound to offer all sorts of classes. Or, take a look at anything local, like little shops and groups, to see if they have classes. The wine and design thing is popular now, so that’s a great option if you’re feeling artsy. If you want to get rid of some stress with a workout, try the gym or YMCA. If there’s a music shop around, try learning a bit on a musical instrument. The possibilities are endless! Make Dinner â€" And Invite Someone Special This is a perfect opportunity for a good date night. You have a lot of time to prepare an awesome meal and make sure everything is perfect for when that special someone comes over. Leaving early also gives you enough time to calm your nerves before they walk in the door. Take that leap! Go to the Grocery Store and Enjoy Having No Lines Everyone tends to get their shopping done either on the weekends or right after work, because that’s the only time they have to spare. After you leave work early, stop at the store on your way home and enjoy the quickest grocery shopping trip you’ve probably ever had. Marathon That Show on Netflix Netflix has an insane number of TV shows, which means you’ll definitely be able to find something you’ll love. We’re in the golden age of television right now, so take some time to enjoy some awesome shows like “Mad Men” and “The Walking Dead,” or the equally awesome Netflix originals, “House of Cards” and “Orange Is the New Black.” Go out on the Town and Have Fun Leave The Office Early Day falls on thirsty Thursday this year! Go out for happy hour with a bunch of close friends, or even your coworkers if they’re allowed to leave early, too. You can always turn this outing into dinner, too, if your crowd isn’t big on alcohol. But treat yourselves and order dessert first for once to change things up a bit! Enjoy Nature Look for local parks or hiking spots near your area and get outside to enjoy them. The world is a beautiful place, and sometimes there’s nothing more fulfilling than seeing the wondrous beauty of Mother Nature. As a bonus, you get to be outside â€" and possibly get a workout, too! Catch up With Family And Friends See what’s going on with your family and friends that you haven’t been able to catch up with in a while â€" especially if they’re far away. All it takes is a simple Skype or phone call to be able to make their day. Go to Bed Early This is a perfect opportunity to actually get the amount of sleep you need (for once). Make yourself some soothing tea to help you sleep and take a long, hot shower or bath to really get relaxed. Your body will thank you in the morning.
